Devon Grapevine

In 2009, Olive Tree won a tender with Safer Devon Partnership (SDP) to carry out a survey into the community safety needs of Devon’s BME communities. The bi-lingual researchers we appointed visited 44 towns across Devon and carried out face-to-face interviews with 265 people from the local BME populations. The result was the Devon BME Community Safety Mapping Report.

Neither the SDP or Olive Tree wanted this to be a one-off consultation exercise and , in 2010, the Hate Crime Prevention Task Group succeeded in getting some funding to pilot a follow-up project which involved creating an online social-media network “for people from other cultures living in Devon”.

Like the English classes, Devon Grapevine is a place where people can meet new people and make new friends but it is also a place where they can find out about the latest news and events; exchange views on different issues; join a special interest group; and find out information about - and contact details for - local service providers.

The pilot, developed in partnership with Devon County Council, was a success and in 2011 Olive Tree was successful in a bid to secure 4 years funding from the Big Lottery.
