Consultation, Research and Training

Through running the English classes and Devon Grapevine, Olive Tree is in week-to-week contact with hundreds of individuals from Devon’s minority ethnic communities and with a wide range of organisations – from all sectors – working within the BME arena. These ongoing links make it very easy for us to carry out consultations and research on a range of BME issues and we are always ready to respond to requests from any organisation looking for help in engaging with Devon’s minority ethnic communities.

Among our staff are several highly qualified and experienced researchers who can design research briefs and manage Action Research projects if required. One recent example, from 2010, of a large scale research project undertaken by Olive Tree is the Devon BME Community Safety Mapping Research Project which involved us in visiting 44 towns and collating the quantitative and qualitative data from 265 face-to-face interviews.

Olive Tree has always specialised in Education and we have several highly skilled and experienced trainers among our staff and on our committee. They have extensive experience of:

• Designing bespoke training courses
• Delivering training to frontline staff, community groups, management teams, etc.
• Training teachers and trainers
• Evaluating training courses

Examples of training projects OTA has been involved in:

• Training workshops for volunteer English teachers (ongoing)
• Understanding Islam – a workshop developed in partnership with Exeter Mosque
• Cultural Competency for 4th Year Medical students – sessions developed for Peninsular Medical School
• Developing session plans and training trainers for delivery of workshops on Supporting BME Victims of Domestic Violence
